There are no problems, only challenges.
That is precisely the attitude that Maarten has in life: positive and full of hope. Even with a rare tumor in his back of 28 cm. Even now that they can mean relatively little to him in the Netherlands.
“I have never experienced anything that I thought of: I am going through this. I have always been a hard worker and put everything in a positive light. When I talk to doctors, they say: you are doing it all very well for yourself ... But yes, I can hardly sit around sulking in a corner? That is really not my thing, and it never works, ee, ft. In America it is. "
How it started.
Well, who doesn't suffer from his back these days? Maarten, as an active rugby player, is. Just such a slightly nagging pain in his lower back. But that will pass again, right? When after a while that still had not happened, Maarten decided to go to the doctor 8 years ago. Secretly more to get rid of the whining than something worse was expected. A 6 cm tumor was discovered with a pre-scan. At least, that's what the doctor thought. A referral, and a second MRI followed. The "small problem" that in the first instance would be relatively easy to remedy, turned out to be a tumor of no less than 28 cm. Quite a challenge.
Way to recovery
Long and difficult, that is how you could best describe Maarten's road to recovery. Because the tumor is located between the spine, it is difficult to operate. During operation number 1, 7 years ago, his left leg weakened by 40%, after which Maarten partially ended up in a wheelchair. After six months of intensive rehabilitation, "everything did it again". Either more difficult. A second operation was planned to tackle another higher part of the tumor. On the evening before this operation, the doctor was at his bedside, but surgery had to be performed again at the location as before. The tumor actually grew like cabbage. From that moment on the wheelchair became a daily fare. This second operation resulted in an incomplete paraplegia: Maartens right lower leg no longer worked.
Two years ago it was wrong again! Again, surgery was performed, but again this time it did not help. After 3 operations of 10-12 hours each, with different irradiations, the tumor grew again. Including accompanying metastases and a lot of pain every day.
To America
Maarten has a rare tumor, a spinal ependymoma. This moves through the brain fluid. Theoretically, it is a benign tumor, but due to the rotten location there is a good chance that it will spread further up, with all its consequences.
During his online searches, he ended up at CERN. A collaboration of around 50 doctors around the world who are conducting research into these types of tumors. Maarten is in contact with them and through this way he heard about a study that started last June (2018). With that information he went to his oncologist in the Netherlands, who made the contact between both parties.
“You have to see it that way. Imagine walking on a lawn and a bird lands, exactly on your hand. So unique is the chance that one specific tumor, that of Maarten in this case, is currently being investigated. "
The treatment
By means of an infusion blood is withdrawn from the body, the immune system is "boosted" and then stopped again. So the immune system actually gets a boost. After this, the immune system can recognize and attack the defective tissue. So the body itself breaks down the tumor. This is called immune therapy.
This session is repeated for 4 months every 14 days. And then for a year, every month. Each session must take place in the US because the drug is not yet officially authorized in Europe, as it is still in an experimental phase. Maarten will be one of the very first people to undergo this treatment.
More information about the examination and treatment can be found here: link to article CERN.
Costs
Because it is an experimental treatment, the treatment itself is paid by the US government. The transportation to and from America, and the stay there, is not. Unfortunately, we cannot fully pay for this ourselves.
This positive-minded father finally wants peace. Of course for himself, but above all for his 4 children and of course his girlfriend. If he drops out, the children lose their only parent, and that should not happen. He will never be able to walk again, but if this treatment works, he is healed.
Will you help Maarten to America?
