Help mijn droom waar te maken: een expositie in New York City!

Dear Friends, Supporters, and Kind Strangers,

Mijn naam is Janey. Als freelance grafisch ontwerper en fotograaf uit Rotterdam krijg ik de kans om in mei 2025 mijn werk te exposeren bij Uncool Artists in New York City. Deze expositie gaat niet alleen over vrouwelijkheid en identiteit, maar ook over ruimte innemen in een stad die het moeilijk maakt om jezelf te uiten.

In New York is zichtbaarheid voor vrouwen geen keuze, maar noodzaak. Vrouwen laten hun aanwezigheid zien, maar soms moeten ze het verbergen, of dat nu in de metro, op de stoep, of in musea is. (On)zichtbaarheid is bescherming en vrouwelijkheid is politiek. Dit project gaat over alle vrouwen die zichzelf zichtbaar maken in een wereld die hen niet altijd ruimte geeft.

Mijn werk bestaat uit een analoge fotoserie van vrouwen in New York en een video-installatie: Een jonge vrouw, genaamd Shevvy, met een vrije geest danst in het MoMA, een vrije spirit die haar identiteit door middel van beweging uitdrukt. De video is gemaakt in samenwerking met internationale artiest Luna Laila. 

De fotoserie toont vrouwen die ik in NYC heb ontmoet, vrouwen die op hun eigen manier ruimte innemen, zich uitspreken, bewegen en bestaan. Met deze beelden wil ik een dialoog starten: over wie we zijn en hoe we onszelf zichtbaar maken in een wereld die nooit voor ons is gebouwd - hoe bouwen wij dan iets nieuws?

Deze expositie is niet alleen een manier om mijn werk te verdiepen, maar is ook geïnspireerd door V-Female Photo Agency, een platform dat zich richt op de visibiliteit van vrouwen in de fotografie—een platform dat ik samen met Nynke Schaaf heb opgezet. Het is een eer om de kracht van vrouwelijke visibiliteit te delen in mijn werk, en dit project is dan ook een weerspiegeling van onze gezamenlijke missie.

De harde realiteit:

De residency betaalt bijna niets—geen vlucht, geen verblijf, geen productiekosten. Als freelancer werk ik hard, maar helaas worden veel creatieve professionals niet goed betaald voor hun werk. Ik ben toegelaten tot vier artist residencies in NYC, en koos de goedkoopste optie, maar ik kom nog steeds niet rond. Ik moest zelfs mijn vliegtickets via Klarna kopen om deze kans te kunnen grijpen. Maar zonder hulp kan ik dit niet uitvoeren.

De opbrengst van deze Doneeractie gaat naar:

• Productiekosten (prints, verf, materialen voor de interactieve installatie)
• Verblijf in NYC
• Vervoer van werk en materiaal
• Alles wat nodig is om de expositie te realiseren van 15 mei t/m 1 juni 2025

Help making my dream a reality: an exhibition in New York City!

Dear Friends, Supporters, and Kind Strangers,

My name is Janey. As a freelance graphic designer and photographer from Rotterdam, I have the opportunity to exhibit my work at Uncool Artists in New York City in May 2025. This exhibition is not only about femininity and identity, but also about taking space in a city that makes it hard to express oneself.

In New York, visibility for women is not a choice—it’s survival. Women make their presence known, but sometimes they must hide it, whether it’s on the subway, on the sidewalk, or in museums. (In)visibility is protection, and femininity is political. This project is about all women who make themselves visible in a world that doesn’t always give them space.

My work consists of an analog photo series of women in New York and a video installation: A young woman named Shevvy, with a free spirit, dances at the MoMA, a free entity expressing her identity through movement. The video is created in collaboration with international artist Luna Laila.

The photo series shows the women that I've met in NYC, women that take up space in their own ways, stand up for themselves and exist within their own rules. With these images I want to start a dialogue: about who we are and how we make ourself visible in a world that was never build for us to begin with - how do we build something new?

This exhibition is not only a way to deepen my work, but it is also inspired by V-Female Photo Agency, a platform focused on the visibility of women in photography—a platform I co-founded with Nynke Schaaf. It is an honor to share the power of female visibility in my work, and this project reflects our shared mission.

The Hard Reality:

The residency doesn’t pay—no flight, no accommodation, no production costs. As a freelancer, I work hard, but unfortunately, many creative professionals are not paid well for their work. I’ve been accepted to four artist residencies in NYC, and chose the cheapest option, but I still can’t make ends meet. I even had to buy my flight tickets via Klarna (a dutch payment service that allows you to buy products and pay for your purchases later) to seize this opportunity. But without help, I can’t make this happen.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards:

• Production costs (prints, paint, materials for the interactive installation)

• Stay in NYC

• Transport of work and materials

• Everything needed to realize the exhibition from May 15 to June 1, 2025
