COVID-19
Het corona virus raakt ons allemaal.

Toen ik gisteravond mijn telefoon opende en dit hartverscheurende verhaal las van Captain Theresa, onze kapitein op een boottocht in de Filipijnen, kon ik niks anders doen dan in actie komen.

FILIPIJNEN

Samen met mijn beste vriendin Kim ben ik in januari nog naar de Filipijnen op vakantie geweest. Geen mondkapjes, geen 1,5m afstand houden, gewoon genieten.

Eenmaal aangekomen zagen we een prachtig (ontwikkelings)land dat langzaam opbloeit door toerisme. Veel mensen daar leven in armoede maar proberen er desondanks het beste van te maken. Wij kregen ontelbare keren gratis eten en gastvrijheid aangeboden ondanks dat men zelf niet veel had. 

Door het Corona-virus is de Filipijnen op slot gegaan en zijn ontzettend veel mensen hun baan verloren. Door een razende tyfoon zijn ook nog eens vele huizen verwoest. Geen bijstand of uitkering, geen zekerheid of woonplaats. Er staan miljoenen mensen zonder voedsel op straat.

De Filipijnen is een prachtig land met prachtige mensen. Hier ontmoette ik Theresa en ineens kwam armoede toch heel dichtbij! 

MOTHER THERESA

In de Filipijnen leven enorm veel mensen van toerisme. Zo ook Theresa. Wij ontmoetten haar op een 3-daagse boottocht. Haar energie en zorgzaamheid waren ongekend! Alle mensen op de boot waren als kinderen voor haar, en er werd 3x per dag heerlijk voor ons gekookt. Wij hadden dankzij Theresa en de crew een onbezorgde tijd.

We raakten aan de praat met Theresa. De Captain die plastic inzamelingsacties houdt om de oceaan op te schonen en toeristen bijschoolt over het belang van gezond koraal. Ze bleek ook een moeder die alles achterliet om een betere toekomst voor haar kinderen op te bouwen. Dat betekende hard werken en weinig vrije dagen. Alles om zoveel mogelijk geld te sparen om haar kinderen naar haar toe te halen en hen het leven en de kansen te geven die Theresa vroeger zelf heeft gemist. Ze was er bijna, zei ze. We hebben er zelfs nog een drankje op gedronken tijdens zonsondergang.

Gisteravond kregen wij een zorgwekkend bericht van Theresa. Wij hebben altijd goed contact gehouden en daarom komt deze armoede nu ook zo enorm dichtbij. Theresa is net als een hele hoop andere mensen alles verloren. Zij, en de hele crew zijn ontslagen en met niks achter gelaten. 

Theresa woont nu in de jungle, in een tent. Voor voedsel is zij afhankelijk van wat er te vinden is (niet veel). Al haar gespaarde geld zal ze moeten gebruiken om te overleven. Plotseling staat Theresa er helemaal alleen voor. Geen huis, haar kinderen ver weg, weinig voedsel en onzekerheid. Met het uitzicht dat het in de Filipijnen nog zeker 3 tot 5 jaar kan duren voordat het land er weer bovenop komt... 

DE DONEERACTIE

We kunnen verschil maken. Daar waar natuurlijk veel slachtoffers in Nederland zijn, is ook de schade in ontwikkelingslanden onvoorstelbaar. Wij kunnen met de kleinste donaties al enorm veel betekenen voor iemand zonder huis, eten en werk.

Deze actie is specifiek voor Captain Theresa, een van de meest zorgzame, liefdevolle personen die ik ooit heb ontmoet. Zij hoopt met het ingezamelde geld haar community te helpen. Het geld gaat o.a naar de ontslagen bemanning van de boot, wederopbouw en hopelijk lukt het haar om haar kinderen weer te zien.

En ja, alle kleine beetjes helpen! Als je een ijsje minder eet op een warme dag, heeft Theresa eten voor een paar dagen.

Op de foto's zie je hoe Theresa drie jaar geleden met haar kinderen in een klein kamertje in Manila woonde. Ook hoe zij en de bemanning op de boot plastic verzamelen en er het beste van maken! Zelfs in de jungle ontfermt zij zich over anderen. Laten we haar een handje helpen!

The corona virus affects us all.

When I opened my phone last night and read this heartbreaking story of Captain Theresa, our captain on a boat trip in the Philippines, all I wanted was to take action.

THE PHILIPPINES
Together with my best friend Kim I went on holiday to the Philippines in January. No face masks, no 1.5m distance, just enjoy.

Once we arrived we saw a beautiful (developing) country that is slowly flourishing through tourism. Many people there live in poverty but still try to make the best of it. We were offered free food and hospitality countless times despite the fact that they didn't have much themselves. 

Because of the Corona virus, the Philippines has been in lockdown and a lot of people have lost their jobs. A raging typhoon also destroyed many houses. No welfare or benefits, no security or place of residence. There are millions of people on the streets without food.

The Philippines is a beautiful country with beautiful people. This is where I met Theresa and suddenly got to know about poverty in the Phillipines! 
 
MOTHER THERESA
In the Philippines a lot of people live from tourism. So does Theresa. We met her on a 3-day boat trip. Her energy and care were unbelievable! All the people on the boat were like children to her, and they cooked delicious meals for us 3 times a day. Thanks to Theresa and the crew we had a carefree time.

We got to talk to Theresa, the Captain who runs plastic collection campaigns to clean up the ocean and educates tourists about the importance of healthy coral. She also turned out to be a mother who left everything behind to build a better future for her children. That meant hard work and few days off. Everything to save as much money as possible to bring her children to Palawan and give them the life and opportunities that Theresa herself once missed. She was almost there, she said. We even had a drink at sunset to celebrate.

Last night we got a worrying message from Theresa. We have always stayed in touch with her. Theresa lost everything like a lot of other people. She, and the whole crew were fired and left with nothing. 
Theresa now lives in the jungle, in a tent. For food, she depends on what there is to be found (not much). She will have to use all her saved money to survive. Suddenly Theresa is all alone. No home, her children far away, little food and insecurity. With the given fact that the Philippines can take at least 3 to 5 years to recover... 

ABOUT THE FUNDRAISING
We can make a difference. Where there are of course many victims in the Netherlands(and other countries), the damage in developing countries is unimaginable. With the smallest donations, we can do a lot for someone without a home, food or work.

This action is especifically for Captain Theresa, one of the most caring, loving people I have ever met. She hopes that the money raised will help her community. The money goes to the fired crew of the boat, reconstruction and hopefully she will be able to see her children again.

And yes, every little bit helps! If you eat one less ice cream on a hot day, Theresa has food for a few days.

On the pictures you can see how Theresa lived with her children in a small room in Manila three years ago. Also how she and the crew on the boat collect plastic and make the best of it! Even in the jungle she takes care of others. Let's give her a hand!
