Help us to bring education to Kanatal

With this initiative we want to give children in the North Indian village of Kanatal access to education this spring (and after).

Background
This is Nidhi (see photo's). Together with her partner Yudish, she runs a cozy, creative homestay in Kanatal, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. They not only give the guests a fantastic time, but they also have good relations in the village. They are friends with the families and know what is needed. For example, Nidhi sometimes buys a warm sweater or some school supplies for the children. She also helps the children with their homework and hosts volunteers regularly to stay in the homestay who, for example, teach English to the children.

There is a public school where the children can go to, but for this they have to walk six kilometers through the mountains. This is hardly possible, especially during the colder months of the year, which means that the children often stay at home. Since there is no compulsory education and the parents do not always encourage them to go to school, the children only go to school when they feel like it. They themselves are too young to see the importance of education. Many children are far behind in terms of education and have few opportunities for work in the future. Girls are often married off, sometimes at a young age, to a man from the city who can support them.

Education is the best chance they have for a better future. Nidhi and Yudish do a lot for the children and we would like to help them with this. Are you in?

Objective
The main goal is to raise enough money to hire a tutor with which children can get lessons in the homestay for a few months.
With 3500 euros we can pay a tutor for a year, including the costs for accommodation and food.

If we raise more money, we would like to use this for a homestay computer, where children from the village can come to do their homework. Homestay volunteers can also use the computer to teach the children. Optionally, teaching programs can be put on the computer. In addition, we would like to contribute to other teaching materials, such as workbooks, notepads, pens, etc.

Help ons om onderwijs naar Kanatal te brengen

Met dit initiatief willen we kinderen in het Noord-Indiase dorpje Kanatal deze lente (en daarna) toegang tot het onderwijs geven. 

Achtergrond
Dit is Nidhi (zie foto's). Samen met haar partner Yudish runt ze een knusse, creatieve homestay in Kanatal, in de Indiase staat Uttarakhand. Ze bezorgen niet alleen de gasten een fantastische tijd, maar hebben ook goede contacten in het dorp. Ze zijn bevriend met de families en weten wat er nodig is. Zo koopt Nidhi soms een warme trui of wat schoolspulletjes voor de kinderen. Ook helpt ze de kinderen met hun huiswerk en verblijven er geregeld vrijwilligers in de homestay die bijvoorbeeld Engelse les geven aan de kinderen. 

Er is een openbare school waar de kinderen naartoe kunnen, maar hiervoor moeten ze zes kilometer lopen door de bergen. Vooral tijdens de koudere maanden van het jaar is dit nauwelijks te doen, waardoor de kinderen veelal thuisblijven. Aangezien er geen leerplicht is en de ouders hen ook niet altijd stimuleren om naar school te gaan, gaan de kinderen alleen naar school wanneer ze er zin in hebben. Zelf zijn ze nog te jong om het belang van onderwijs te zien. Veel kinderen hebben een leerachterstand en weinig kansen op werk in de toekomst. Meisjes worden vaak uitgehuwelijkt, soms op jonge leeftijd, aan een man uit de stad die hen wél kan onderhouden. 

Onderwijs is de beste kans die ze hebben op een betere toekomst. Nidhi en Yudish doen veel voor de kinderen en wij willen hen hier graag bij helpen. Doe je mee? 

Doelstelling
Het hoofddoel is genoeg geld inzamelen om een tutor aan te kunnen nemen waarmee kinderen een aantal maanden les kunnen krijgen in de homestay. Voor 3500 euro kunnen we een jaar lang een tutor betalen, inclusief de kosten voor accommodatie en eten. 

Als we meer geld inzamelen, willen we dit graag gebruiken voor een computer voor in de homestay, waar kinderen uit het dorp kunnen komen om hun huiswerk te maken. Vrijwilligers van de homestay kunnen de computer ook gebruiken om de kinderen les mee te geven. Eventueel kunnen er lesprogramma’s op de computer worden gezet. Daarnaast willen we graag bijdragen aan overig lesmateriaal, zoals werkboeken, notitieblokken, pennen etc.
