Doneeractie Food for Bobbi Bear

Al jarenlang volg ik het prachtige maar loodzware werk van Operation Bobbi Bear, een mensenrechtenorganisatie in Kwazulu Natal, Zuid Afrika.

De Bobbi Bear is een knuffelbeer, die niet alleen symbool staat voor de organisatie, maar ook daadwerkelijk eenniet bedreigend middel is om kinderen te helpen over hun (sexueel) misbruik te praten. De kinderen krijgen, nadat zij uit hun onveilige en gevaarlijke thuissituatie zijn gehaald, deze beer in hun armen. De beer ondersteunt de kinderen verder gedurende het traject dat het kind ingaat met Bobbi Bear.

Operation Bobbi Bear zorgt niet alleen voor redding, opvang en begeleiding van deze kinderen, maar onderzoekt ook naar de mogelijkheden tot een rechtzaak. Met die rechtzaken krijgt het misbruikte kind een stem, en dat is wat Bobbi Bear beoogt. Middels Child Safety Officers. proberen zij niet alleen (sexueel) misbruikte kinderen op te sporen, maar ook een bewustwordingsproces op gang te brengen binnen de lokale gemeenschap over de impact van (sexueel) misbruik.

Daarnaast doet Bobbi Bear ook nog aan HIV/Aids preventie en interventie. De medicijnen om de kans op HIV/AIDS te verkleinen, moet binnen uiterlijk 72 uur in het lichaam van kind terecht komen. Om in aanmerking te komen voor deze medicijnen, en om aangifte te kunnen doen, is het dus nodig snel op tafel te krijgen wat de er is gebeurd met het kind. Een verklaring van zulke jonge en getraumatiseerde kinderen opnemen is vaak heel belastend voor de kinderen. Zij kunnen bijna niet uit hun mond krijgen welke handelingen er met hen zijn verricht, en welke private delen daarbij waren betrokken. Daarom is de Bobbi Bear ontwikkeld. De beren worden speciaal gemaakt, en dienen jaren mee te gaan, omdat zij daadwerkelijk als verklaring van het kind worden meegenomen in de rechtzaak, die soms wel 4 jaar duurt. Het Bobbi Bear Centrum is door Nederlandse Crowdfunding tot stand gekomen, is volledig eigendom van Operation Bobbi Bear, en volledig betaald. Operation Bobbi Bear is NGO, volledig onafhankelijk van de overheid. En dat is maar goed ook!

Er is namelijk veel politieke onrust in Zuid Afrika. Het werkgebied van Operation Bobbi Bear is van oorsprong heel arm. Het is het gebied van Zuluś. Afgelopen jaren leek het iets beter te gaan,  maar momenteel gaat het ecnomisch steeds verder achteruit. Er is een toename van werkeloosheid en als gevolg daarvan een toename van excessief alcohol en drugsgebruik. Het tragische gevolg is een enorme toename van sexueel misbruik, mishandeling, ernstige verwaarlozing én verlating van jonge kinderen. 

Tot overmaat van ramp zijn de meeste (wél overheidsgebonden) hulporganisaties voor kinderen gesloten, omdat zij geen overheidssupport meer kregen. Dit betekent een nóg grotere toeloop van kinderen bij Operation Bobbi Bear. Tot nu toe houden zij de deur open voor elk kind dat wordt gebracht, maar de kinderen voeden is een enorm probleem aan het worden. Daarnaast zijn alle bedden/beddegoed na 15 jaar (2e hands aangeschaft) echt versleten, moet er ook in de nacht personeel zijn bij Bobbi Bear en is het door gebrek aan alles wat je nodig hebt voor jonge kinderen, niet meer mogelijk te voorzien in de basisbehoefte.

For years I follow the beautiful but very heavy work of Operation Bobbi Bear, a Childeren rights organisation in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.

The Bobbi Bear is a teddy bear, which is not only a symbol of the organization, but also actually a non threatening way to help children to talk about their (sexual) abuse. The children get, after they have been brought from their unsafe homes and dangerous situations, this bear in their arms. The bear stays with the childeren during the rest of the proces they go through at Operation Bobbi Bear.

Operation Bobbi Bear not only provides rescue, shelter and guidance of these children, but is also exploring the possibility of a lawsuit. With those lawsuits the abused childeren get a voice, and that's what Bobbi Bear is fighting for. Through Child Safety Officers. they not only try (sexually) abused children to detect, but also raise an awareness process within the local community, on the impact of (sexual) abuse. 

In addition, Bobbi Bear also works on HIV/Aids prevention and intervention. The medications to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS have to be in childś body within 72 hours. It is therefore necessary to get on the table quickly what has happened to the child.

Making a statement is for such young and traumatized childeren very stressful and possibly increases the childs trauma. They can hardly get out of their mouths which actions are carried out there with them, and which private parts were involved. Therefore, the Bobbi Bear has been developed by Operation Bobbi Bear. The bears are specially made, and serve for years to go, because they actually are an explanation of the child be taken into account in the court case, which sometimes lasts 4 years. In the video below Eureka Olivier tells how it works. Eureka is already working 18 years at OBB, and is now Field Manager at the Bobbi Bear Centre.

The Bobbi Bear Center is buid due to Dutch Crowdfunding, is wholly owned by Operation Bobbi Bear, and paid in full. Operation Bobbi Bear is a NGO, completely independent of the Government. And that's a good thing!

There is much political turmoil in South Africa. Most people who live in the working area of Operation Bobbi Bear are very poor. It is the area of Zuluś. Recent years it seemed slightly better, but currently, the ecnomisch still further back. There has been an increase in unemployment and as a result, an increase in excessive alcohol and drug use. The tragic result of that is a huge increase in sexual abuse, abuse, severe neglect and abandonment of young children.

To make matters worse, most (not NGO) aid organisations for children closed their doors because they are no longer supported by the government.  This means an even greater influx of children at Operation Bobbi Bear. So far they keep open the door for every child that is brought, but feed the children is a huge problem. In addition, all beds/sheets are worn out after 15 years (purchased 2nd hand), and it is, due to lack of everything you need for young children, no longer possible to provide the basic care needed by the childeren.
