Help me to fullfil my dream to make a documentary about my biggest passion!
Hi, I am Efie!
For as long as I can remember I have been surrounded by Balkan music and dance. My parents, both Dutch, met each other at a folklore dance festival in Hungary. He was playing the accordion, she was dancing. They settled down in the Netherlands, but brought the folklore into their Dutch home.
In a house filled with music and folklore, I fell in love with this cultural heritage of former Yugoslavia. It started with practicing the dances, and developed into joining a folklore ensemble that performs traditional dances from the Balkan. Besides dancing and singing, I also devoted much of my free time into finding original parts of costumes and learning about the history. In 2017 I went to Banja Luka, Bosnia, to join the ensemble Veselin Maslesa for three months.
Over the last decades a lot has changed in the folklore world. This rich cultural heritage is slowly disappearing. That is why I want to make a documentary, to capture it before it's too late. Fifty years from now, it might not be possible to make this documentary anymore. This subject has received little attention in the past due to the conditions of war. I would like to make a film that does not focus on the (consequences of) war, but instead shows the cultural history and strength of the people of former Yugoslavia.
As I see the folklore world around me changing, I am also curious to find out what the future will look like for 'my borrowed heritage'. Will the traditional ways disappear completely? Are there new ways in which the youth is experimenting? What can we do to keep the authentic folklore alive? In search for answers, I will travel through Serbia and Bosnia.
Unfortunately it is not possible for me to create this documentary on my own.
To finance the research, film crew, travelling, materials and editing I need your help.
You can support me by donating a kind gift.. In return I will send you a link to the movie once it's finished, which I am hoping will be in December 2019.
Help me capture and preserve this precious heritage, so it won't be forgotten.
Thank you so so much!!
Much love,
Efie
