“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Deze mooie quote, is waar de organisatie ‘Because We Carry’ voor staat. 

Graag wil ik jullie vertellen dat ik 15 maart aanstaande afreis naar Lesbos, Griekenland om een week lang de bovengenoemde organisatie te helpen in Kara Tepe met de dagelijkse bezigheden, zoals het uitdelen van een gezond en vers ontbijt. De drijvende kracht achter ‘Because We Carry’ is een groepje van drie vriendinnen uit Amsterdam die in 2015 na een inzamelingsactie met meer dan 1000 babydragers op zak naar Lesbos afreisden om daar de handen uit de mouwen te steken. Lang verhaal kort, de situatie was veel heftiger dan ze zich ooit hadden kunnen voorstellen en ze zijn gebleven. De dames hebben met elkaar de stichting ‘Because We Carry’ opgezet en werken wekelijks met een nieuwe groep van zeven vrijwilligers vanuit de hele wereld. De vrijwilligers bekostigen hun eigen reis en het is de bedoeling dat elke vrijwilliger ook nog eens 1150 euro (8000/7) meeneemt ten behoeve van de vluchtelingen. Met die 8000 euro per week worden de meeste uitgaven gedekt.

Een jaar geleden werd ik geattendeerd op een bepaalde aflevering van ‘Het mooiste meisje van de klas’, waarin Steffi, een van de oprichtsters van ‘Because We Carry’, werd geportretteerd. Ik vond het heel mooi en bijzonder om te zien dat zij ‘gewoon’ alles achterliet en aan de slag ging op Lesbos. Het raakte me diep en ik hoopte toen al dat er een moment zou komen waarop ik mijn steentje zou kunnen bijdragen.  

Zoals jullie wellicht weten ben ik in Augustus 2018 begonnen met de Internationale PABO in Meppel. Een onderdeel hiervan is de ‘Give Back Campaign’. Dit houdt in dat je je tijdens het schooljaar op wat voor manier dan ook gaat inzetten als vrijwilliger ter bewustwording van het feit dat wij ook wat terug moeten geven aan de wereld. Je mag dit verder helemaal zelf inrichten en ik dacht meteen aan Lesbos. School was ook gelijk enthousiast en ik mag dus gelukkig een week school missen. Ik ga!!

Nu dan mijn vraag aan jullie, of jullie zouden willen helpen om die 1150 euro en misschien zelfs nog wat meer (voor wat extra spullen die men daar nodig heeft) bij elkaar te sprokkelen. Alle kleine beetjes helpen en alvast veel dank hiervoor.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This quote, that is what the NGO ‘Because We Carry’ stands for.

On the 15th of March I will be travelling to Lesbos, Greece. There I will be helping out the above named organization with their daily activities in Kara Tepe, like distributing a healthy and fresh breakfast. The driving force behind ‘Because We Carry’ is a group of three friends from Amsterdam. In 2015 these three young women collected over one thousand baby carriers and made the journey to Lesbos. To make a long story short, the situation on this small island in Greece was worse than they could have ever imagined. They stayed and founded the organization that we now know as ‘Because We Carry’. Every week a group of seven new volunteers travels to Lesbos from all over the world. The volunteers pay their own journeys and every volunteer is expected to raise 1150 euros (8000/7). 8000 euros is how much a ‘Because We Carry’ mission week on Kara Tepe costs.

About a year ago I was told that I had to watch a specific television episode of ‘Het mooiste meisje van de klas (The prettiest girl in the class)’, in which Steffi’s life was captured. Steffi is one of the founders of ‘Because We Carry’. I thought it was so amazing and inspiring to see how she just left everything behind and started making the lives of the refugees in Lesbos a little bit more bearable. It touched me deeply and from then on I hoped that one day I would get the opportunity to go to Lesbos and help out in any way that I can. I am so fortunate to live in a country where it is safe, as we have no say in where we are born. It is a big dream of mine to spread love and hope to the people who need it and I hope I can do this in Lesbos.  

As you might already know, I started the International Teacher Education for Primary Schools course in Meppel in August last year. In my course we have to do something that is called the ‘Give Back Campaign’. My course believes in the fact that it is of great importance to give back to the society. We, the students, are free to decide how we would like to fill in our ‘Give Back Campaign’. I immediately thought of Lesbos. Luckily, school was very enthusiastic about my idea as well, and allowed me to miss a week of school.  

So, my question to you is, would you like to help me reach 1150 euros and maybe even some more (for a few extra things that the people in Kara Tepe need)? Every little bit helps. Thank you so much in advance.
